SAILING ASSOCIATION, INC.
13th ANNUAL
J-Jamboree North
J/24 - J/80
Saturday and Sunday, September 16 & 17, 2000
Invitation
The LAKE WINNIPESAUKEE SAILING ASSOCIATION, INC. (LWSA), cordially invites you to participate in the THIRTEENTH Annual J-Jamboree North Regatta on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. This Fall regatta traditionally produces excellent winds, great race administration, lots of races, the famous Budweiser Beer Truck, and an outstanding barbecue. The thirteenth annual event promises no less.
There is plenty of room to leave boats in the water Friday and Saturday Evenings and people may sleep on the boats. Boats will be rafted, so bring plenty of fenders and line. Most motels and inns are heavily booked this year so make your reservations early. We can arrange for people to stay at private homes. Please call the people listed in the Notice of Race for information. There is a good hotel list on the web at: www.lakesregion.org
On Saturday evening, the Winnipesaukee Yacht Club will provide a barbecue, indoors at their facility.

On Wednesday the weather forecast was for "rain all day" on Saturday and Showers on Sunday. Couple that with the J/80 NA's the week before and the result is only two traveling J/80's making the trip for the 13th annual J-Jamboree North. This is the fifth year with J/80's in the fleet. Thanks to the hardier J/24 fleet that produced nine traveling boats along with two local boats for their District Championships.
I arrived at Fay's shortly after Noon on Friday in a heavy downpour. There was one 80 and several 24's already arrived. The rain stopped about a half hour later. Then the sun came out for a preview of what was to be for the next two days.
As I came up "the broads" by powerboat Saturday morning the breeze was already a steady 13-15 knots out of the Northwest with whitecaps and building chop. By race time the breeze was a little stronger and the chop up to two feet in places. The race committee set the traditional "box" course right in the middle of the broads and we proceeded to race five races. The breeze moderated to the low teens in the early afternoon then built back up by four when the last race finished. We caught our best and longest plane just after the downwind finish of the last race. The Laconia airport was recording steady breeze around 16-17 by then.
The weary but exhilerated fleet retired to the Winnipesaukee Yacht Club where the Michelob Beer Truck was strategically stationed. We had a social hour followed by a terrific dinner prepared by the club membership.
Sunday started with breeze in the low-teens from the WSW and little or no chop. As we sailed four more races the breeze diminished. By the last race it had all but died with patches of decent breeze here and there and huge holes in the middle. The J-24 race was abandoned at the weather mark, and the 80's continued to finish a once-around course.
Haul out was quick and smooth with all of the boats out by five.
Thanks to all who travelled to make this years event a success and thanks to all who helped out locally with race-committee, social, tee-shirts, etc., and special thanks to Principal Race Officer Don Sibson, Fay's boatyard and Brian Richardson who launched and hauled all of the traveling boats.
